The aim of this project was to strengthen PNG NFA’s internal capacity to undertake and interpret fisheries stock assessments. The project was undertaken in two stages: the first stage involved the development and delivery of an introductory training course in the principles and practice of contemporary stock assessment approaches. This was delivered as a one week course in Port Moresby. The second stage reviewed available data for PNG’s main fisheries, and based on this, provided advice on the types of stock assessment approaches possible, as well as long-term data collection needs. The second stage involved a two-day internal workshop with relevant NFA staff to undertake a metadata analysis across each of the main fisheries.
